Batman and Superman dropping in at Whitehaven Christmas light switch

Whitehaven will be awash with festive cheer on Sunday for the town’s Christmas lights switch on celebration.

Superhero Batman and the Batmobile will be joined by fellow superhero Superman, Father Christmas and other characters for the event, organised for the first time by the newly formed Christmas in Whitehaven committee.

The black, glossy, finned replica of the Caped Crusader’s armoured fighting vehicle, as featured in the 1989 movie starring Michael Keaton,

will lead an array of fantasy characters at the Lowther Street event which runs all afternoon.

At 2pm, Batman and Superman will abseil down the front of St Nicholas’ Church and the Batmobile will arrive on Lowther Street (via Duke Street and Scotch Street) at 2.20pm.

A raffle is being held with a prize of a ride on Santa’s sleigh on Sunday. The sleigh will be pulled by reindeer through Whitehaven’s main streets in the procession that begins at 5pm, ahead of the switch on at 6pm.

Second prize is to ride a sled pulled by a team of huskies. Raffle tickets will cost 1 each with proceeds going towards next year’s switch on event and are available from Threads, Arrighi’s and Darling Manor.

Entertainment around the town and on the stage on Lowther Street featuring local dance troupes begins at 1pm, featuring street theatre, live music,
