Construction students from City College Norwich overcame the weather and a demanding schedule last week as they built a 9m tall, 1:30 scale replica of Barcelona’s Torre de Collserola in just four days.

The project to construct a scaled version of Sir Norman Foster’s communications tower took place at the National Construction College at Bircham Newton, near King’s Lynn, as part of the Constructionarium initiative.

It was the first time students from a further education college in England have been involved in the scheme, and, for 10 of the 11 strong team of Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment students, it was their first experience working on a construction site.

Cale Timmann, 19, from Norwich, said: “It was good to find out about how a site works and to see a project through all of the stages, from beginning to end,

and to be involved in problem solving as we went along. It was hard work but it was also a lot of fun.”

The role project manager was take on by construction student Bobby Hughes, 18, from Watton.

He said: “It gave a little taste of what it would be like to work as a project manager. I learnt that it is quite a stressful job.

“But I enjoyed the experience. It was good working with the guys from Kier. They gave me different options of how to do things, but left it down to me as project manager to pick which would be most suitable.”James Johnston, construction lecturer at City College Norwich, said: “The week was a chance for the students to experience the realities of a construction site and working on a civil engineering project, albeit on a smaller scale, whilst up against tight timescales.

“Despite the challenging weather conditions, the group worked really hard, putting in some long days without complaint, and showing great team work,

camaraderie and initiative to see the project through to a successful completion.”
